Which wine goes best with pizza?

Marla, Florida

Answer:

There are nearly as many answers to that question as there are pizzas. Of course the simple answer is “Whatever you like” but a few guidelines may help. Remember that Italian wines are meant to accompany food. Often the foods and wine of a region develop side by side and compliment each other. With that in mind I would pair a classic pizza margherita with an Aglianico from Campagnia, but might pair a pizza topped with Speck (a Northern Italian ham) with a crisp Proscecco from Friuli.. As a personal preference I would avoid, oaky Chardonnays and fruit forward Cabernets. You will want something on the crisp and tannic side. Even Italians frequently choose beer with pizza, so you can’t go wrong with a cold Peroni or Morreti.
